Day of Silence

Perhaps you've heard of it before. One day where people sign up to not speak for an entire day at school to support LGBT. I've personally never thought this was a very effective cause. To me, it just looks like a way for kids to get out of having to say anything in class. Now, I 100% support gays and lesbians and everyone in between, but this is not the right way to support yourselves. Staying silent is what gets these people bullied and and hurt everyday. How do you expect to get anything from that? To express your feelings and beliefs, you need to speak up and show the world how you feel and that you do believe in gay rights (if you do.) I hear people being called homos everyday and the word "gay" is thrown around like it's nothing. It is far from nothing. People cannot just sit quietly in their seats and let people put them down.

I feel so strongly about this subject because being in the theatre, I'm friends with people that aren't straight. And quite frankly, who knows how many other people I might know that are just too scared to say anything. Day of Silence is an intriguing concept, but I'm afraid I cannot and have not participated in it. If I'm going to support LGBT, it will be openly and not in silence.

Being quiet can be a good thing in some situations such as getting on your teacher's good side or a stage manager is shouting at everyone to shut up. *shutters* But in truth, this is not something that should be kept quiet. Kids should be able to express themselves and have a say. A day of silence does sound nice sometimes, but not when it's for a cause such as this. Will no one speak up? Silence is golden, unless you're the one getting hurt.
